detailed info

Like organic, flowing sculptures, many of Robert Mickelsen's glass pieces appear fluid, as if still in the dancing in flames used to create them. A master of fine glasswork, Mickelsen has discovered his own vocabulary over the years, taking an ancient glass technique, known as flamework, to another dimension, sometimes incorporating resist sandblasting ('graal') in a novel manner to create images or achieve a specific texture. He then highlights these areas with color gradients done in oil paints to create a translucent, glowing and temptingly touchable surface. Driven by pure and innate subconscious thoughts and spontaneous fantasies and dreams, Mickelsen mesmerizes us with his dialogue of wordless banter, expressing the unexpected in himself, through his work, in this fantastically creative and superbly crafted artform.

Mickelsen has taught extensively at the Pilchuck School of Glass, Penland School of Arts and Crafts and The Studio of The Corning Museum of Glass. His work is exhibited in some of the finest galleries and prominent juried exhibitions in the country. He is included in prestigious collections such as the Renwick Gallery of the American Craft at The Smithsonian Institution, The Corning Museum of Glass and The Carnegie Museum of Art.
